Current Big Bear Snow / Road Conditions.

It’s no secret that there is snow in the mountains, and everyone wants to come up and enjoy the bounty.  Here are the conditions and some suggestions for your trip up here.

First all roads are open.  Caltrans worked around the clock to remove snow and rock fall so that they can widen the snow removal that they have already done on the roads. Check the Caltrans website to get road conditions before you come up. There is still a possibility of snow slides and rock fall. Check highway 330, 18 and 38.   Today when I went down 38 for Search and Rescue training you could see a section of the road that had a snow slid and another part that had a rock slide.

Stores, gas stations and restaurants are all fully stocked and ready for a big weekend.  And I am sure that the ski resort mountains are in perfect condition.  We are expecting a lot of people to come up and enjoy the resorts and the snow.  Try and leave early because there will be traffic coming up Hwy 330 and 38. While it is about a 15 minute longer trip you might look into coming up the 18 through Lucerne Valley. Speaking of traffic, the town will be very full.  You might want to bring up your food or make a good list so you only have to go into town once.  Also try and get reservations in the restaurants, the waits will be long.  There is still a lot of snow but where it wasn’t piled up half or more of it has been washed away by the rain.  You can see by the 2 pictures the difference at my house.

Speaking of cold, be ready for temperatures with a high of 43 and a low of 30.

Make sure you already have a reservation for lodging.  Most places will be sold out for the next few weeks.

Remember to have patience and fun!

While we are usually thinking of the snow season as slowing down and the start of spring and nicer weather we have another system coming in starting Monday. Usually we get a few small storms in the second part of March and the month of April but this is going to be a good size storm. We are expecting about 2 feet of snow and some rain. This will be welcomed to help fill up the lake which is enjoying a big boost from the rain and snow that we have already had.
